Smoke in the Dark

I really enjoyed creating the smoke in the dark themed shoot. It was very different from anything that I have done so far and resulted in images that I believe are of a high quality. The difference in my images are what makes it so special, I don’t like to be tied to just one theme or idea and for this project I was able to expand my knowledge and experience by experimenting with a range of different techniques. The images above are the result of my patience with the camera and I used a shutter speed of around 4 seconds to really catch the smoke in all its movement. I decided that movement was something that I really wanted to capture through my camera on this shoot in particular. In the past my steel wool experimenting came out well and the effect was astonishing to see when I actually looked at the images. The way the light can bend and move at your will is something really great to be able to create. And through the smoke I was able to further capture this, as the smoke also demonstrated this kind of movement. Each of the images hold their own composition and they make the image work. The contrast of the black background and the white smoke is quite startling. It makes it even more so since I used things on Photoshop such as curves, exposure and vibrancy. The images that came out as a result of my photo-shoot with smoke are not only great to look at but they keep your attention. You want to see the lines of the smoke as they twist and turn in the image and I think it isn’t just important to catch a person’s attention, it’s important to keep it and make the experience worthwhile. Overall I am happy with the work that I have done and night photography has allowed me to experience new conditions and new techniques that will further my work in the future and on future projects.

The image I am going to look at further is above. Using a model to blow the smoke seemed appropriate since the photographer that I based my image on was also using a female as his subject. He was more focusing on catching her expression however, while I am more interested in the movement and contrasts that the smoke creates. For this image in particular I would say that is has almost an asymmetrical composition, because the smoke is coming from only once side of the image and the subjects face is only at one side of the image also. The colours in the image include: nude, brown, black and white. Each of these colours just add to the overall atmosphere of the image and each add to the quality. I enjoyed taking these images because of the interesting subject choice that I have chosen. Something that I would improve if I ever did night photography again would be making sure my images didn’t come out as grimy. Other than slight discolouration in the smoke at the bottom, I think that the image came out as I wanted it to.
