Light Painting (Test Two)

My second attempt at Light painting went a lot better than my first. I was able to create actual shapes with the light rather than messy unnoticeable patterns. The orbs I have created are inspired by one of the photographers that I have researched previously called Gareth Brooks. I hoped to experiment more with this kind of light painting but unfortunately time constrictions didn’t allow it. To create this image I used a string of fairy lights, a shoelace and tape. I first bundled the lights into a ball and taped them so they would stay in that ball, then I ted a piece of string to the ball, so I could swing it around. To get the desired orb effect I started on the left with my arm straight out and moved in a 180 degree angle behind the orb, while continuously swinging the ball around, with my hand in the exact same position but my arm and body moving around it. Unfortunately when moving out of one of my images I ruined it slightly by leaving a trail of light, even though this is true I did do something that I decided I would improve on last time I did it. I managed to get out of the image in time so that it looks like a mystical floating piece of light, not an orb with a person or object standing next to it. The composition of this image is something that can be debated. While one uses obvious radial composition, the other could be both asymmetrical and radial. By using this the effect is good, your eye is drawn to the swirling patter of light and its almost hypnotic to look at. I think that overall I have accomplished a better quality image than the first light painting test that I did.

The image above is my favourite of the images that I have taken during this photo-shoot. As you can see the image is of a radial composition and this adds to the power of the overall image. I would have liked to experiment more with colours but the light blue does work well against the darkened surroundings and I think I chose righting in the colour of my lights. I have already explained how I created the image, and something I think I could improve on if I ever went to do light painting again would be creating new shapes. Gareth was able to create swirling different colours and also craft them into an orb and in the future I may attempt something similar to this. Something else that I could improve on next time would be using different, new and vaster backgrounds. A few examples of these backgrounds can be seen in Gareth’s work and include: beaches, woods and urban areas. The reason that I chose this image over the other is because of the bigger impact it makes when you first view it, its kind of startling to look at.
