Steel Wool (Test One)

Steel wool was one of my favourite photo-shoots to do so far. To achieve the effect of the spiral and sparks flying from it, there is an easy process that you can do. The first thing you need to do is gather the objects you need, these include: Steel wool (the finer the better), a metal whisk, a lighter and a dog leash or piece of string. First you separate the steel wool with your fingers to allow air to get between the metal, and then push as much as you like inside of the whisk. After it is inside attach the leash to the end of the handle of the whisk. Next all you do is use the lighter to set fire to the wool, after that the only thing that you need to do is stand back from your camera and use the leash to swing around the whisk with the wool (which is o fire) around in the air. I decided using that I had used radial composition as your eyes are immediately drawn to the circle of fire in the centre of the image. By using this type of composition the viewers eyes are drawn to the exact area that you’d like them to look at and then they are able to wander to the sparks that are created from the centre. Radial composition is a powerful type of composition and I hope to experiment more with it in the future of my night photography. The colours of the image are quite simple, yet in a strange way elegant. I may experiment in future with other colours if I can find a way to do it. This was my first attempt at using steel wool and I think that in the future my images will be of a higher quality, as they still seem to give off a blurred effect. Even though I used a tripod I still got the effect I was looking not to get – a grainy result. For my second test with steel wool I think that expanding my location will be key to better results. When taking this set of images it was raining and very windy, the weather was not on my side. Hopefully when I repeat this experiment it will be under better circumstances and give me a better result overall.
